I have a 454 mercruiser with a volvo 290, I just pulled the engine and outdrive I replaced the bellows,gimble bearing,ujoints all the normal replacment parts.I am having this rolling knock or rattle I have checked everything I can think of but it sounds like it is coming form the bell housing. any help would be appreicated. thank you

it depends was it making this noise before you changed these parts or after, if it was after then somthing was put together wrong if not i would check to see if you either have a knock in your lower end of motor or just somthing loose rattling around, in the engine compartment of a boat noises can travel and throw you off of where its coming from so mabye try a stethascope to narrow down where its coming from.

if you look where the outdrive shaft goes throught the hull to the engine, you'll see a large round bearing...say 3-4 inches in diameter. it's called a gimbal bearing. replace it and keep it greased a couple of times a season & you won't hear that anymore. did you check the u-joints when you had it off before?

Is it a Mercruiser or a Volvo? Exhaust anti-backflow flappers can cause a rattling sound, most notably at idle.

check the out drive to engine alignment ,this requires a alignment tool.make sure everything has grease.
