if you both have children and are paying for half the cost of the household, then yes you may each file as head of household. However, it may not even be necessary depending on the amount of income either one of you have. If the income is not too big, then filing single will get the same result as filing hoh but with less hassle from the government......

jazzkidz is right. Ajajene is lucky she got away with being wrong. Head of household is explained right on the instructions to the tax form. It is not meant to approximate married filing jointly for unmarried couples.

No. If you're living together, you each file as "Single". If there are kids involved (and I pity them), the custodial parent can file as "Head of Household", and the other tax filer files as "Single".
