Some poeple keep a spare mattress under their bed for when guests come over. I suppose if it had a design it would go better with the carpeting

So stains aren't as noticable if you spill something on your bed and it goes through the sheets and whatever to your mattress.

That's true and the commercials always show people sleeping on bare mattresses too.
