Welcome to the human race. The easy way out is always an option, but you're right, it's not the best option.
I own a business. Two of them actually, and I know the easy way out usually results in more work later. So, as my parents and grandparents on both sides used to say, "When that colt's tired enough he doesn't want to make another trip around the pasture, he'll figure out how to head that cow."
That means, when the horse is convinced you're going to make him finish the job and he's tired enough he wants a rest, he'll do whatever it takes to get it done right.
You can take that same approach with yourself. Step back and figure out what results you want out of the situation and then figure out how to get there. Don't think about time and effort, think about results and how to get there. Then get started. Don't stop to think how tired you are or how long it's going to take, (unless you have ten minutes to be at work and you've decided to clean the basement!) just get started doing it right.
Treat yourself like an employee. How would you expect someone else to do this if you were paying them? Then do it that way.
Don't think about the effort, that's the key. Think about the results.

It's hard to answer your question because you don't give the details. Any self-defeating behavior might be related to self-esteem and possibly past trauma. Try to understand yourself and what the purpose of those behaviors is.
Life is hard. But you're strong and you can change a lot about yourself.

By everything I ever read, this statement seems to be true:
Energy goes where attention goes. So if you zero in on the stuff you want to happen and not on the stuff you dont want to happen, with all your power, things will materialise the way you want them. Check out The Secret which seems to be a bestseller on Amazon at the moment.

I think most people try to take the easy way out. Unless you are harming yourself or someone else with the behavior... Go for it!!

ask yourself what would be best for someone else...
Once you start pondering the ways to improve the lives of others, it is tough to follow through with the self-serving decisions.
