Great question for your teachers or school administrators.

Once you pass national/state testing, you will be a paramedic after you graduate. Lots of people don't go through all the levels of EMT; they just take the Basic class (prerequisite to most paramedic programs, but sometimes included in the two year courses), skip the Intermediate course, and go straight to Paramedic. The Intermediate level isn't even valid in some states (Alabama, for example).

Plain and simple version, you must have your EMT-Basic certification before applying for your EMT-Paramedic, so yes, you need to start at the "lowest level" no matter what state you are in.

EMT-Paramedic skills builds on top of your Basic training. You can go to any level of EMT after you receive your basic (like intermediate) but most go straight to Paramedic.

My husband is firefighter and EMT and at his department they will offer to send you to paramedics school after you have been there for a certain period of time. They usually hire at the firefighter level then move people up after they have been there for a certain alrealy predetermined time and after you pass a test. They did just hire someone who has already been a paramedic but he has to start at the bottom too. Until you make Chief they start you and make you work your way up. If you work for a private company and not a city then things work differently. Otherwise most cities run their operations in a para military style.

I was an EMT years ago and my understanding was that you had to have some EMT time in first.
