I got two snails two days ago. I got a gold and a ivory at petsmart, they have not come out of their shell yet. im worried that they are dead, I put them in a 5 gl tank with convict cichlids and their babies, and the convists keep on picking at them, they just lay there, the only movement they get is when the fish bump them.

The easiest way is to take them out of the tank and try to gently pull back their inner flap (what they use to shut themselves up in their shells). If it doesn't come open easily and you have resistance, the snail is still alive and fighting to keep you out of it's shell. If it is alive at all, you will not be able to easily open it. Snails can also die of trauma and although it sounds silly, if they have too many fish biting/attacking them, it could weaken them. You also may want to check the different chemical levels in your tank. Sometimes something real simple can kill them. If too much aquarium salt is added or whatnot, which is what happened to my Mystery snail, may it rest in peace.

Take them out of the tank and smell them. Honestly, I'm not kidding. I wouldn't be surprised if your convicts ate them right out of their shells (some fish will do that), but if they are still in the shells and dead they will smell AWFUL. That's how ya know.

they may have bean eaten already. I would bring them back to the pet store. Also snails can over populate your tank in a couple of weeks. You can go from two snails to fifty snails in a couple of weeks.
