As this is a women's health board, I'm assuming that you're asking about a vaginal discharge. But you can have a discharge from any bodily orifice. That's because the most broad definition of a discharge is any liquid, liquidy or slight soft substance that is expelled from your body through any orifice. That includes tears, ear wax, urine and stools.
However, to get back to vaginal discharge. This can be a number of things, most of which are perfectly OK.
For example, your menstrual flow is a vaginal discharge.
The vagina is a self-cleaning organ, so it is normal to have slight to small, but clear discharge on a daily basis.
When you are sexually aroused, you produce lubrication, and that's a vaginal discharge.
When your body is preparing for ovulation, the mucus plug that is normally in your cervix thins and is expelled. That's a vaginal discharge as well.
However, some types of vaginal discharges, the ones that are not not listed above, can be symptoms of an infection of some type, one that is not necessarily sexually transmitted. Yes, there are innocent vaginal infections as well.

Nasal discharge is snot.
Ear discharge is ear wax.
Vaginal discharge is, well, vaginal discharge.
It's your body's way of keeping itself clean and moist. If there is something wrong with your discharge from anywhere, then that is a good sign that there is something wrong with you.

Mostly referred to in medicine as something your body doesn't need and it is getting rid of it. Something gooey, puss, or gross.
