I am looking for a toy camera similar to the old ones for a toddler. any ideas. thanks

Are you telling me they don't sell play cameras in the stores any more? Or are you looking for something quite specific?
I can't imagine you can't walk into a toy store and not find a playskool-level toy camera... but maybe I'm wrong.

Just tell her they were "confiscated" by the Vice Squad when you were implicated in the doping scandal that rocked the internet chat community back in 2010. It seems that a group of stay at home moms were apparently "juicing" their Chase&Sanborn in order to gain an edge over their "forced to work outside the home" competitors. Nothing was ever proven ,of course, which is why mommy never had to do any time in the joint - but the items taken by the "coppers" were never returned. This way you'll have an out in case they ever show back up at a collectors convention.
