Lately I have been getting sharp pains in my upper chest. I was just to the doctor and everything checked out ok. These pains are piercing sharp and last for about 30 seconds; at which point I can hardly breathe or even move. What could be causing this? Someone suggested an ulcer but that didn't seem right to me?

Usually a heart pain is not a sharp pain, but a pressure like someone is sitting on your chest. This pain sounds like something gastric. It could be caused by several things. It could be an ulcer, gastric reflux, hiatal hernia, or even gallbladder disease. If the pain feels like it goes all the way through to your back, or sometimes hurts up into your shoulder, I would suggest getting your gallbladder checked. In the meantime, try something like over the counter Tagamet or Pepcid and see if this helps.

I suggest you see a gastroenterologist who is a specialist. How old are you? If you are over 40 you may want to have a stress test to see how your heart is doing. If you are female, some dumb doctors don't understand that females have some different symptoms than men. Make sure you seek out an answer, sharp pains are not normal at all.

Could be many things. I'll offer a couple of possibilities; muscle spasms, acid reflux, cardiac event, anxiety.
You've already been to the doctor... so, let's assume that they didn't miss something as obvious as heart problems. Acid reflux can cause quite sharp and sudden pains, it is a possibility.
It might be something that just goes away...
I would pay attention to your overall health, diet, eating habits, the timing of these events and see if you can't figure it out. Healthy eating, plenty of water and regular physical activity can help to alleviate a lot of problems. But, the point is to try to figure out the pattern that precedes these events.
