I'm trying to decide between two names for my girl due in 24 days. We have tentatively decided on the name Ariana (are-ee-AH-nah). That was my second choice behind the name Alyssa which I LOVE LOVE LOVE. The problem is that my first name sounds similar to the name Alyssa. My name is not spelled anyway similar to Alyssa and begins with an "O" not an "A," but the similarities in pronunciation is detering me from using Alyssa. What would you do?

I think you should go with your heart. If you feel that strongly about Alyssa then go with it. I personally like Ariana. We had that name picked out for my daughter but decided to change it last minute. It is not a very common name which is why i think i like it so much. Which ever you choose will sound beautiful. Good Luck and Congratulations on the baby :)

I really don't think your names are that close.

Also, I think the name Alyssa Ariana sounds really good! Put your last name in there and see if it works.

Here are some middle names, though, in case you don't like how Alyssa Ariana sounds:

Alyssa Jo
Alyssa Marie
Alyssa Raine
Alyssa Jayne
Alyssa Joy
Alyssa Joyce
Alyssa Renee

Good luck and congrats!

If you truly love the name Alyssa, don't let anything stop you. I happen to like Ariana just as much, so I could go either way.

*anecdote time*

My first name is very very similar to my father's first name. My parents thought that they could handle the difference, but they couldn't. By the time I was a month old, I was going by my middle name, just to make things easier around the house. That was fine and dandy, but by the time I entered school, I wasn't willing to go back to my first name. The past 12 school years have been incredibly complicated. The first day of school is always full of "No, I prefer to be called ____, my middle name." "Why? Because I've gone by my middle name my entire life!" Then, by the third week of school when teachers get it down, it goes smoothly. Until we get a substitute teacher, or until the teacher has to pull out his attendance pad for some reason. I have been accidentally marked absent countless times because of it.

Long story short, unless you are confident that you can handle having an Alyssa around the house, you should probably go with Ariana. (Or Aliana...) I'm sure Alyssa would make a perfectly good middle name.

It depends...

If your loved one calls you by your name all the time it might get confusing. But, my hubby and I call each other mom and dad. I know, strange I guess. I just grew up hearing my parents and grandparents use the term...so once we had kids it just fell that way. Or, if he calls you babe or hon you may not have such a big problem.

I just hope you aren't filled with regret over the name you choose.

But, it probably will get fustrating for her as she gets older if your names are similar and someone calls from school...and the names sound so much alike that the conversation gets muddled. Or, you pick up the wrong calls and such.

I say, Arianna Alyssa will give you the best of both worlds. But, if you only like Alyssa as a first name...you have to decide what's in both you and your daughter's best interest.

Good Luck!

Alyssa is more of a pretty name I think.
Jullisa is also a nice name with a similar sound , you might want to consider that one.

When I was pregnant, I already had a name in mind, but it has become WAY popular since years ago when I first heard of it and extremely loved it. I tried thinking of other names, and came up with one I liked, that I've heard of but was not too common. But I ran into the same problem, it sounded too much like my bf's other daughter, even though they weren't the same names or spelled alike. They just had too many of the same sounds. So I used the original name I liked, even though it's so popular, because it was my favorite, and used the other name I came up with as her middle name. Now she has a name I totally love, and I also chose the whole thing because not only did I like the names, but they had really simple but nice meanings, too.
