The fins have NOTHING to do with sexing an angelfish. There is also no ball at the back of the anal fin. Where does this come from? True that you are NOT guaranteed that if you have a pair, they will mate! But, If you limit there options (Only one male and one female per tank, They basically will find they like each other and WILL spawn.) In 10 years I have had 17 pairs of angels. ALL OF THEM DID SPAWN,EXCEPT ONE PAIR> he wanted nothing to do with the female and after about 6 months in the same tank, He killed her!) I have about 10 years experience in breeding freshwater angelfish. My males are a little larger when full grown that the females. The way to tell male from female is the FOREHEAD area all the way down the the mouth. (You have to look at the profile of the fish as they swim by.) The males forehead area as slight curve in the forehead, and slight curve down the mouth. Female are different. (Like us- they are more curvey!) The forehead looks like it has a hump, and as you follow the profile down to the mouth. You will notice another nice curve in the profile just before there mouth. If you have more males then females then watch out! They will fight. They will also fight if the tank is to small as they grow. They weeker male will die as a result. I have 2 breeding pairs. Mine are full grown veil angels. The males bodies are about the size of a females fist and the fins or veils are about 7 1/2 long. They are beautiful. My females are about 1 to 1 1/2 in smaller in body size and there fins or veils are about 6 inches long. The four angels lived peacefully in a 29 gallon tall for about 2 years. Then one day I came home from work and the smaller male was tore to shreds. HE almost DIED! I had to seperate them to 1 pair to 29 gallon tanks. The breeding has been much better, since they have been divided. The spawn regularly. I have 400+ babies per pair, per spawn. If you intend on breeding. You should divide them later BEFORE they become full grown. If breeding is up your alley.... then you should know. My angels EAT THERE YOUNG! You will need a 10 gallon baby grow up tank. The tank needs to be filled with water from the parents tank. The female will lay her eggs on a flat surface of the tank. ie.. The aquarium glass, heater, slate ect. The male will fertilize them if they are a light yellow color the the male fertilized the eggs. If any or all of the eggs are white. He did not fertilize them. Two days after the eggs are fertilized, they will be in the wiggler stage. The parents will eat them all at this point. They must be removed to the grow up tank. (Wiggler stage the fry are still partially in the egg and partially out. the fry wiggle) If you decide to try to raise the fry then carefully remove the fry from the parents tank. DO NOT USE A NET. Use a cup or you finger to loosen them from the glass. Being very careful not to injure the fry. catch them in the cup, Place them in a baggy. float the baggy in the grow up tank 20 minutes. release the fry in a BARE aquarium. NO GRAVEL. they are to small and get stuck in the gravel and die. Bare aquarium, with sponge filter. (Regular filter will suck up fry) Heater. treat water with melafix. ( melafix is wonderful stuff. It treats alot of stuff. It is an antibodic! This is a MUST!!!! This will keep the baby fry from getting a bacterial infection from any UNFERTILIZED eggs that may be in there with them! B IG PLUS< MUST HAVE! USE A NEW air stone. This will keep the babies moving. This will also cause any unhatched egg to hatch! Feed new babies baby brine shrimp ( YOU WILL HAVE TO HATCH THEM DAILY) for first to weeks the start feeding "small" amount of regular fish food. BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVER FEED! This will foul the water and the babies will DIE! Hope this helped. Have fun! P.S. If you intend to breed. You will have to visit at a distance. Feeding them is fine and stopping by once or twice a day is fine. But, If you hang out a lot in front of the glass. They WILL NOT SPAWN! They need privacy! Like us I guess! Funny huh. Enjoy you NEW buddies! They are A LOT of fun~! I have 10 fish tanks. Six are saltwater tanks! Saltwater is the best! Not to hard to take care of either! I have six seahorse tanks and they keep me pretty busy! All those baby seahorses!!!!! If any one has questions, I will be glad to answer them!

I've heard that you can tell if they are female if their forehead is straight whereas the males have a slight bump or bend in their foreheads. My angels seem to follow this pattern except a few, which may be confused... The females can be just as aggressive as males, so thats not a good indicator. So the best way is to wait and see until they breed.
Also, dont freak out too much if the parents start eating the babies. They transport them in their mouths. If they feel threatened by other fish then yes, they will eat them. It seems to take a pair a few tries before they get the hang of parenting and some angels just dont have the knack. I've had angels breeding for over a year now and each pair is different.

There is no "true" way to tell a male and female angelfish apart until they are about to mate or if they try to. You need to look around the anal fin. If it is a male. you will see a small like ball protruding from it. If it is a female the thing sticking out will be larger and shorter. This is the only way to truly tell them apart.

. obtaining a pair does not guarantee they will mate and they can be temperamental about choosing their own mates very difficult to sex at the very best one sex has lateral eye stripes straighter than the other sex.your best bet is to buy several small fish and let them decide. this will take some close observations about their behavior
