The highest goals per game average (min. 200 games) is Mario Lemieux (0.768).

After retiring in '97 though, his GPG average was 0.823 (613 goals in 745 games).

His career was both truly impressive and tragically short.

Super Mario of course. He made ONE comeback after that. After like 2 1/2 years or was it 3 1/2 I can't remember. He didn't RETIRE again until last year when his heart problems forced him to retire. As to the one answering Gretzky he didn't retire until 1999.
