i think m=8.

if you distribute 1/4 to (m-4)...you get 1/4m-(1/4*4/1)...when simplified is 1/4m-1

then your new equation is 1/4m-1+1/4m=3...combine like terms and solve for m.

1/4m+1/4m=2/4m 3+1=4 therefore 2/4m=4...divide both sides by 2/4 (remember when dividing fractions, multiply and use the reciprocal)...and you get m=16/2, simplify m=8

For this problem you can also times the entire equation by 4 to eliminate the 1/4.

1/4(m-4)+ 1/4m=3

Multiplying it by 4 eliminates the 1/4 because you are multiplying it by its reciprocal, making it 1.

m-4+m=12
2m-4=12
2m=16
m=8

In the end you get the same answer.
