What in the world is going on? My sister is getting married in April and being a traditional family, we wanted to throw rice as she left the garden after saying her vows.

But the groom's family informed us that the city has an ordinance against throwing rice at a wedding. How stupid is that? It has been done for hundreds of years!

Why is this prohibited?

Already four of you have said that it kills birds. You people are smart enough to know that it DOES NOT KILL BIRDS aren't you?

Rice does not kill birds, that is an urban legend. However, it does leave a huge mess. I don't know the specifics of your city, but I would guess that they just don't want to clean up. Or maybe they are gullible and believe that it kills birds.

"It's a myth. There is no reason why birds, including small songbirds, can't eat rice," said Ned Johnson, a professor of biology at Berkeley who lectures frequently on the food and feeding of birds.

Many churchs and reception halls have rules prohibiting the throwing of confetti or rice. These rules work to keep the property clean so that the next happy couple doesn't get its send-off amid the leavings of the previous pair. Confetti is notoriously hard to clean up; not even vacuuming a lawn will return the grass to its pristine condition.

Rice poses a unique danger. Not to birds, though; to people. Scattered on a hard surface (such as the steps of a church or a dance floor) it puts anyone who walks across that surface at risk of taking a nasty spill. Far better to prohibit rice throwing at a wedding than to end up with an injured guest.

Don't do it for the birds, do it for the inlaws.

Actually, they are right. It does injure and even kill wildlife if it isn't cooked. Ours has an ordinance against it as well, so people give away those little packets of Jordan almonds Mmmmmmm.

Why don't you just throw birdseed? That stuff flies better anyway.
And not for nothing, but that "traditional" junk is so recent it isn't funny. I'd lose the idealism if I were her.

birds will eat the rice, then the rice will blow up in their stomachs, at the same time blowing up the bird.
