Since you already have so many forceful and authoritative answers from this great host of experts on war, I'll only try to add a bit of color to their august pronouncements.
War is: fun (yes, I said fun) and tedious and meaningful and wasteful and sweaty and loud and exhausting and awe-inspiring and lonely and exciting and dirty and satisfying and cold and interesting and scary and exotic and frustrating and stinking.

that's my insight into what makes a physical conflict a "war". You are called to kill an individual solely because he is a member of a group (IE gang, nation, tribe, religion) which opposes the group of which you are a member.

I think war starts in mind and ends in mind.
It's perceptual and then becomes real, if our self awareness is not developed sufficiently to know that it's just perception !
"A" believes in - X and "B" believes in - Y.
Instead of accepting differences if both try to prove that they are right they will end up in fight!
