I'm talking about my yahoo email account, and I know that I can change my password. But I'm interested in finding out if - in fact - someone has been using my email address without my knowing it.

That question cannot be answered without knowing what site/service you're talking about. However, most sites do not offer their users an option to monitor logins.

Why don't you just change your password?

Edit: The most you could do is try making a list of which e-mails are new (not marked as read), then coming back later and seeing if they are still unread.

Email something to yourself from someone elses email account with their permission and check it that night, if it has been opened or deleted (moved in any way) then someone is hacking into your emails. Have you tried setting a password theft protection on your account? It is extra safety measures that yahoo offers, you could try it if you don't have it. Or get a new email account and transfer your addresses but not through an email from the old account giving the new address. Tak all of your addresses and send notifications from there telling people that you got a new email. A fresh start never hurts! Good luck with it.
