mounting holes in the case, what is the advantage? i.e. the motherboard spacer is sitting on a piece of electrical tape covering the hole in the case.

The only reason I can think of is trying to avoid a short circuit in a faulty casing by using the tape to somehow insulate contacts on the board.

This is never necessary in a properly designed & undamaged case and/or board.

... could have been worse .. may have used duct tape ( a la Red Green) instead...lol !
