When it comes to politics, why does everyone have to be either conservative or liberal. Can't you just be an individual person with different thoughts or feelings all working towards one common goal? Everytime you hear about elections you always hear the same thing "will it be a win for the republicans or the democrats?" When the hell did we decide that our whole system was based off of blue or red? Can't you just be a group of people who agree or disagree on certain subjects? My problem is both sides need to just shut up and stop arguing with each other. If you just put that aside, maybe together, we can focous on things that need change. Pretty soon, it turns to hatred. I'm so sick of liberals calling conservatives rednecks and conservatives calling liberals hippies. Stop getting mad at each other and fix out the problems in society. Pointing fingers and constantly blaming the other individual or group doesn't solve problems. Remember hitler?

Does anyone else find this annoying?

And of course, don't give me any "well conservatives are more attacative" or "liberals point fingers more" you're bound to say that if you are a liberal or conservative yourself...so shut up. By doing that you are pointing fingers yourself. put the finger down, and shove it.

Yeah, I find it annoying. I'll admit that when I hit posts misrepresenting what liberals are saying, I fight back--but I also often chide liberals for posting attack-questions too. About a week ago I asked how we Americans could move from being *enemies* back to being mere *opponents* and half my answers were along the lines of, "If that means I have to listen to some LIEBERAL (or REPUGLICAN) then NO WAY!" It was pretty discouraging.

Thanks for a reminding me that it's still possible to just... talk. With some of you, anyway.

As a self-proclaimed libertarian, I despise the system. Governments such as the German parliament (?) seem much nicer, as more than two parties can actually have power.

I'm guessing that the ideological divide in America comes from our system of government. There is only enough room for two parties, as Ralph Nader kindly pointed out by his actions. When a third-party enters the system, the division will ensure victory for the ideological opponents. Thus, only two parties can flourish. For either party to have success, they need as much support as possible, and thus citizens have to side with the lesser of two evils.

The part that really irks me is when someone supports a party, and they are labeled by it. For instance, I supported Republicans in 04, because I was turned off by the absence of Democratic long-term planning. People would always assume that I was a Republican, though, even though that couldn't be further from the truth.

Unfortunately, I see no way to reform the system while keeping the Constitution intact. It is a two-party system, and that is virtually unchangeable.

As for working towards a common goal? Aint gonna happen. Lets use poverty as an example - everybody opposes having poor, homeless people. Politicians universally wish that poverty could be eliminated. There will never be a unified movement against it, though, because they will never come up with a strategy that everyone agrees on. Democrats think that we should give them a lift onto their feet, whereas Republicans think that they will get stronger if they learn to fight their own battles. Which idea is better? It doesn't matter, because 49% of the population will oppose the idea anyway.

It is very annoying! Pointing fingers and name calling is about all politics are good for anymore. These officials have all the power to really make a difference and fix problems in this world but spend too much time playing games that they should have put away since grade school. When will the real problems ever matter to any of them?

I really find these politicians annoying. They are hypocrites, they say one thing, and then do another once elected.
That is why I only trust God's Heavenly Government to rule. Daniel 2:44, shows that soon God will put an end to all these Governments of the world.
One of the main reasons, is because people have continued to dominate over each other, and they have hurt millions of innocent people with their lies, dishonest practices, greed, neglect, torture, warfare, and etc.. Times are not going to get any better, especially if imperfect people are ruling.
There have been many though, who have honestly tried to help people, but they don't succeed for long because they are not powerful enough to change people hearts, only God can do that.

Politics have changed so much in my lifetime.

Back when Nixon was elected, I didn't see the huge difference between Republican and Democrat I see nowadays.

However, the stakes have been raised considerably. People act like politics is life and death because it has really become just that. Terrorists only need to be right once to win. A lot of us listen to the loopy logic and loony, naive hippie-era ideas proposed by Liberals, and we just can't believe these people have two brain cells to run together.

I know I sound harsh. I know I sound dismissive of people who do not share our opinion. The Left and the Right both feel that the other one is blind. Tensions are high, because it's gone from a high stakes poker game to Russian Roulette, and both sides think they know which chamber that last bullet is in.

Sorry if it's annoying for you, but this is deadly serious.

You've made some good points, Carolyn. I do not differ with you.

However, you have the old saying, "United we stand ... Divided we fall." The politicians of America have taken this advice with a passion, thereby helping to polarize the political arena.

Unfortunately, the internal workings of the political parties do not support your view of things, either. If you deviate from your party line too far or too often, they demonize" you and they'll toss you out on your ear. This has the effect of the candidate losing many supports as well as some of his campaign funds that he might have been eligible for from his/her party.

And that's where things need to chance, I believe. Thanks for a great question, Carolyn.

I agree with you one hundred percent, but I think that the problem is deeper. Check this out... The whole entire political system is flawed simply because the people in power, including mayors, prosecutors, the president, everybody, are concerned with one thing only. That is that they get re-elected or promoted. So these people concern themselves with what "looks good on paper". So basically you have all of these political figures not doing necessarily what needs to be done, for the good of the land, but what serves their personal interests most effectively. Its just a big game of "get ahead in my career". If you ask me, that is as wrong and opposite as it gets.

I asked a similar question about a month ago and got the same answers. Nevertheless there are some people who have nothing else to do other than to label people. There are those whio love to argue, or call someone an idiot or some other nonsense. I've learned to ignore them.

The media is responsible for fostering this false sense of right vs. left. The real spectrum of political beliefs is not one-dimensional.
