I am wondering if it is possible to get a Tivo that does not need Digital Cable or DirecTV, and can simply run off of basic cable. Is there anything like this and how is it programmed if there is such a thing.

Hi Kevin,

Sure, any TIVO will work with basic cable.

You tell TIVO when you set it up where you live and what kind of service you have. You will enter your zip & TIVO will ask you to verify the name of your cable supplier & the type of service. Then TIVO will know exactly what channels you get.

What ever type of cable you have TIVO will work.

Go for it!

Series 2 TIVO units only work with basic cable. They are not capable of recording the hi-def channels - as a matter of fact, don't think TIVO records any channel with 3 digits, but I might be wrong on that.

The new TIVO units coming out are hi-def capable, but they retail in the $700 range, ouch!

Tivo has coax connectors that will let it be the tuner for you on basic cable, just like on a VCR. The Tivo set up will let you chose your cable company and the service level you have.

This is sort of off topic, but if you have a media center pc, or Vista PC, I advise you to get a PVR, (Personal Video Recorder). Even if you dont have a pc like that, I would recommend you buy one b/c tivo charges a fortune to use, but if you spend around $80 for a pvr, you never have to pay a charge again, and it is just as simple to use. But, you do need a PC with Media Center. Good Luck!

Series 2 Tivos do not have a digital tuner in them. If Comcast in your area is not also sending out the analog channels (in my area TWC still does), then you can't pick up the channels. You would need to get a Comcast tuner/box and synch it to your Tivo.
