DirecTV discontinued the TiVo brand (HR-10) in favor of the own brand (HR-20). However, the TiVo will still receive much HDTV from DirecTV, and DirecTV continues to support it. The reason that many TiVo are showing up on e-bay is that subscribers are getting good deals on switching to the HR20. The main advantage of the HR20 is that it can receive local HD stations from the satellite, but the HR10 cannot. DirecTV is using a different compression method (MPEG4) for these local stations, while other programming (HBO, Showtime, HDnet, etc.) is still in MPEG2 and can be received by the HR10. If you have an antenna that can pick up the local stations off the air, you don't need the MPEG4 capability of the HR20, and the HR10 will work fine. If this works for you, and you can get a good price on an HR10, it may definitely worthwhile to do it. You will have to subscribe to DirecTV service, and perhaps add their HD package (you can get some HDTV programming without that, however). Eventually, DirecTV will add more nationwide HDTV channels in MPEG4 which the HR10 will not be able to get, but no one knows when or what those channels will be.
NOTE: Make sure you get a dish along with the receiver, and that it is the oval "3 LNB" dish. Unless you are handy in this area, you will probably have to call DirecTV to have it installed. Pointing the dish can be tricky.
