Goldfish are low-maintenance pets, just feed them and change their water, and they look nice.

They are a high maintenence pet which requires you to form an attachment and commitment if they are to live a few decades. They come in many varieties, and no two fish are the same. With most tropical fish, you get the same genetics and coloration in every member of its species. A neon tetra will always be a neon tetra. With goldfish we have learned to manipulate their genetics and form breeds and standards for quality just like you would find in dogs. A fish show judging goldfish is a lot more fun than if a show judged electric yellow cichlids.

I think everyone who says they're easy to take care of doesn't understand goldfish at all. "I had one that lived for 7 months!" Wow! Is this supposed to be a long time? It isn't when you consider they can and should live 10 years easily if they're well taken care of and as long as 20 to 30 years! There is a lot involved in taking care of goldfish so that they are happy and healthy. But, enough of that. I'll step off my soapbox now. I love goldfish because I call them the puppy dogs of the fish world. They play and tumble and snuggle and bump and act silly like little puppies. They are very social and love their own little friends and their human friends too. They follow you around (well, as well as they can given they're in the tank and you're not!) like you're their mother and interact with people more than most fish I think. You can teach them tricks and get them to eat out of your hand just like a doggie. I wouldn't have any other kind of fish. But, that's me!
Oh, and Kylie! Glad to have you back. You've been gone a few days!

because they're the all american fish. common in movies and tv all of the media really are goldfish in goldfish bowls.
however, despite what people have said here, and what the media portrays, goldfish are a lot more high maintenance than most fish. they require a lot of room (10gallons per fancy when young, 20 per fancy when older, and commons need to be in a pond). they are very dirty and get VERY big. way too big for a bowl. they need a good filter. most are prone to lots of health problems. and while they still have "long lives" even when improperly cared for (up to 8yrs sometimes) it's really not long for a goldfish, only compared to other fish. so they have fairly short and usually painful lives for goldfish when improperly cared for. goldfish can live for 20 years or more when cared for properly.

What Goldfishes are you talking about actually? The American goldfish are more like koi-that is half-breed btw koi and goldfishes, like those that Elmo keep. Asians type are more majestic! Japanese love those with no top fin-Rachu. Top class Rachu can cost easily S$ in thousands! China prefer longer fins Ryukin and Lion-head! While South-east asian would prefer Mancho, short-fin Ryukin.
Not easy fishes to keep for sure! They eat like pig! Almost anything you give, they eat! And so, they will **** like Panda! Always eating, always shiting. Thus, your filter must be good.
They are relatively long life, nearly 10 years. And can grow to size bigger than your palm! So, they should need very big 'Goldfish Bowl'! And quite some commiment!
Don't pick goldfishes as your 1st attempt to keep fish.
Don't pick goldfishes just to please your 3-yr old kids..
Good Luck.

While what Venice and other say is very true I think it also stems from another reason. We are (obviously) conditioned to think they are easy to care for. So much so that even pet stores sell them as the "easy" alternative for kids. Further, they are often inexpensive. I refer to feeder gold fish mainly here, but beginners or parents just looking to satisfy a child with a complete indifference and a minimum of effort and expense will opt for the "easy" and cheap little goldfish.
And not to mention the every popular and wildly misnamed goldfish bowl .... I'm next for the soap box Venice lol

i have two and i have to admit it, it is because they are sooo cute! they come to the tank if they see you, and they have very pretty coloring and are easy to care for. they are also inexpensive fpr people who don't want to sped 20 dollars on a fish. I don't really know why i love them, but you just have to love them!

I think goldfish are popular because they're easy to take care of, look nice in your house, and are a great pet to use to teach your kids responsibility. They don't take up much space and are fairly cheap also.
