1: If you're so concerned about other peoples' opinions (rather than the truth and finding out about it), then why even ask? Oh... well that's right! You're just so dependent on a sign from higher intellect that you've failed to research on your own. No offense meant, of course.
2: Holistic medicine, when practiced by a real, knowledgable, wise doc, is a very effective treatment option for virtually every ailment. (Just short from things that require surgery, but then even some people argue that holistic medicine will go as far as to prescribe surgery... if you're seeing the right doctor.)
Good luck, and... Well... Good luck.

Holistic and naturalistic medicine is viewed askance by some in our culture. However, more and more MDs are beginning to take a more holistic "mind, body and soul" approach. Doctors are also advocating healthy lifestyles over medicine much more now, and they are educating themselves about herbal products and becoming more open to discussing them with patients.
I can't speak about how other doctors view this. However, we nurses and the patients that we discuss it with LOVE it when doctors can adopt holistic viewpoints. You find it much more in younger docs, as the entire medical community is taking a more holistic approach to health.
If you would like a doctor who will be this way for you, then speak to your MD about holistic and natural therapies. If he or she scoffs, then keep trying doctors until you find one who will help you in the way you desire.
Also, please do not view Western medicine as some kind of Big Evil. An overall healthy life, and natural remedies can be wonderful. However, there are certain life threatening or altering problems that do require synthetic drugs. This is why I advocate finding an MD who takes a holistic approach, rather than an unlicensed "holistic practitioner" or "natural healer". These people may be wonderful at what they do, but often lack the necessary training or credentials to treat complex medical problems.

The thing is holistic treatments that haven't been accepted by the medical community sometimes work, but sometimes don't, and sometimes have actually been proven NOT to work at all or to be harmful. With a holistic doctor your treatment will be very hit-or-miss. This is why they are frowned on by medical doctors, who only use things if they've been actually scientifically proven to work and to be safe. Makes sense.

I don't frown upon holistic doctors. Generally I smile at them, depending on how friendly they are. And in most cases they are much friendlier. The only people frowning on holistic doctors are people who don't know much about them. Prejudice and ignorance is the enemy of these healers. In my town, we have a naturopathic doctor who is also a licensed MD. She is worth her weight in gold. And she has a great smile. Your on the right path, keep looking for information. The more you learn about natural healing the more you will learn to appreciate the holistic doctors. Did you know acupuncture is consider to be holistic? Chiropractors use holistic methods too. Did you know that there are herbal doctors? Keep looking.......

Yes, they are frowned upon by pharmaceutical companies and doctors. After all, if we healed ourselves through holistic doctors, they would go out of business.
A great holistic website that helped me in more ways than one is listed below.

Depends on what you mean by holistic Drs. There are holistic MDs who are just docs who say they take a 'whole body' approach. Then there are holistic practitioners who have no credentials at all, and base their treatments on hearsay. I say, buyer beware. I have MS and people are always recommending this or that. So I try to find out all I can before trying something.

Most holistic or natural doctors are not covered by medical insurance, so often if someone chooses to go to one, they get to pay out of their own pocket. That makes some people frown.
But if you can afford them, holistic doctors are quite thorough.
Live well

In the enthusiasm to have the government control things they have defined diseases as needing their meds.
Schools to teach medicine have their funding (in part) related to following the rules that are prescribed by government.
The sad fact is that we are waiting for the ones who will not learn to die off because we know there is soooo much more.
The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies has good muscle info.
