I was just thinking of the future of me and my boyfriend, when I realized that I am very scared to have his kids. Mental disorders. I have a strange type of ADD but I still live like a normal person. But my boyfriends brother is a diagnosed psychopath, or sociopath. It is one or the other. I can’t quite remember. He lives in a good family, my boyfriend is a good sane man. But his brother causes them hell. He is a bazaar , and dangerous mess. Is there any chance that our kids could be born a psychopath, or sociopath? Or is it not inherited, but developed?

This is a very legitimate question. It is also one of many layers. First, there are really no strange types of ADD. Its psychopathologic manifestations are relatively cut and dry. Also, it is in no way indicative of any form of psychosis. There is no credible research demonstrating that ADD is genetic. My advice for this is: get off of the amphetamine salts, they will do more harm than good. It will be hard but try to learn some new coping skills to deal with the symptoms and frustration.
Second, it is somewhat irrelevant whether or not your brother in law, or what have you, is a sociopath or a psychopath. If he has a serious mental illness (psychiatric) then he should have an axis I diagnosis. You should find out what this is; as his behavior will obviously affect your lives. As far as the genetic basis of psychosis- there is very little credible research that suggests that any form of psychosis can be passed along genetically. It simply depends on the amount of a certain catecholamine that breaks down dopamine. The risk for genetic involvement is slim and should not be of major concern for you. However, i think that you should be more cautious of the psychotic behavior patterns, exhibited by your brother in law, and the type of environment this creates for your child(ren).
This should give you some basic answers and some further grounds for research.

Y'know, there is a fair amount of research showing that mental health problems are genetic, but they don't always appear the same in all family members. The problem is allso considered recessive, so you and your partner have probably a one in four chance of each kid you have together having some sort of mental illness. But really, look at your families on BOTH sides. If you see family members everywhere who are kinda strange, obsessive, depressed, or just plain eccentric then beware. But my hubby and I both have crazy families, and I have bipolar disorder while my hubby has depressive tendencies. But our son is the most cheerful, even-tempered, intelligent two yr old I've seen in 10 years...

the type of disorder you are talking about is usually genteic, but it can be caused by other factors. drug or drink abuse can cause sociopathic disorders, as well as being prolonged in the birth canal(o2 deprivation). Schizophrenia has a documented genteic link. it usuallyt shows itself in the teens or early twenties with severe cases presenting in childhood. Not developed, but can be a combination of genetics and environmental factors.....

You should ask your doctor and also do your own research and be prepared if you decide to have children. My son's father is a sociopath, rapist and murderer but my son is a wonderful person. It sometimes breaks my heart how sweet he is and smart too, he's grown now 18 years old, so far so good. (knock wood)

i'd advise that your buddy seeks help from a Counsellor quite than a Psychiatrist or a Psychologist first . Even going to the well-being practitioner and discussing it with them will help in looking out the place the difficulty began from and then if he mandatory to work out any of the different 2 Professions, He would desire to be referred for help . the difficulty had to commence from someplace and it relatively is dealt with then the will handle it . i'm so sorry that he feels this manner . desire it relatively is of a few help to you ] Take care Knell 22

It can both be inherited and developed; if they are given special attention to prevent it from happening while they live in a safe and comfortable environment, they probably would be fine. if you have children, you should just be more observant of bizarre behavior, because if they inherit it, spotting it from the beginning will prevent it from developing worse.
