I am reading The Secret now; I have read similar books in the past and like most folks I am down for something that will change my way of thinking; I didn't know such a book existed but I was told that the DVD in itself is powerful; I haven't seen Oprah with the segment discussed but I feel that if helps someone, why not? why not have a good life? why not do what it takes to have it? I am a church going person, but I believe that we have to change the way we think or feel on things in order for things to happen for the good.

I read it in school. I believe the mother was mentally unstable. I can't remember every detail of the book but at some point she had obviously become resentful of her life and took it out on her eldest child - being in the unstable mentality that she was she probably viewed him as "the beginning of the end". She probably perceived that her happiness began to dwindle with the birth of her children and because David was the eldest he is the one she took it out on. I'm not agreeing with anything she did. The things she did were sick and unforgivable. I could never fathom a woman, a mother doing that to her own child but the reality is that it happens. It happens much more than anyone would like to admit and while I believe that woman should have spent her life in a prison cell for what she did to her child she was mentally ill and something should have been done about it much sooner. The father was also at fault for what happened. He was aware of the abuse but did nothing to stop it which makes him equally disgusting. The only thing I learned from that book was how cruel some people can be. I know the author wrote two more books depicting his experiences after that part of his life but I never got around to reading them.
