We call it theory because science recognizes the fact that there is always more to learn. Only the closed minded will state fact and decide that all there is.

Science is a word derived from latin word "scientia".Meaning of the word is knowledge only.So any organised knowledge is science and it has nothing to do with reality. We have misunderstood the word as physics or chemistry etc. These are exact science which can be measured with some way lie degree celsius,cm,etc. Those which cannot be measured still continues to be science.Again scientific theory is different.Theory is something to explain some phenomenon. But it cannot be proved. If it can be proved theory becomes law.Assumption, theory ,law etc are different stages of knowledge/science.

Science is based on experimatal evidence. I.E. if you wish to prove or disprove any theory, you can do the experiment or study.
The theories are based on the real evidence and thus - yes can be questioned but only from the REAL evidence.
There is a massive leap from 'something we made up' to studied, experimented, evaluated theories.
Evolution may be a 'theoiry' however it is solid science and therefore as near to fact as one can get.
Also be careful becuase if you denigh the process of science then what happens to the legle system.
If science is mearly theories just like what anyone can think then the bible Qu,arn etc is just a book like Harry potter or lady chattily

I agree with Joan,, everything is theory. and that includes the Bible. Time is theory. And alot of this we read more than likely was made up just to pacify us... something for us to look forward to ...something to make us believe in when in fact we really dont know. Money pays a lot in theory. You get enough people thinking that the world in fact isn t round alot of them will begin to think that way.

If you put a cat in a box, and calculate the air in the box you can produce a theory that the cat is dead after a certain time has passed. It is not a fact until you open the box and see the dead cat. at what point do you believe the cat is dead?
that it the difference between fact and theory, they are much closer to each other that either is to an unproven idea.

This is frightfully true. The entire body of our knowledge at its best is but a fabrication of our own perception. In the body of our knowledge all the facts are arbitrarily defined and relatively catalogued into the registers of our perception. And there is nothing that can every be known for its absolute reality, not fact can ever be established in complete isolation; I know for example what a wheel is because I know what cart is; and I know both wheel and cart combination because I know their use and purpose. I know their purpose because purpose is mine. But who am I?
The absolute knowledge of everything is an acknowledgement of our ignorance; it is just like saying that in order to see light we need to know darkness. Science is just a systematic study and recording of all arbitrations and partialities of our world, the world that is just our peculiarly human way of perceiving existence that we call our reality. Without scientific methods to aid our perception we would be very limited in the circle of our perception. The important this is not that if there is a factual reality escaping our all-theoretical world, the important and rather amazing thing is that we have constructed for ourselves a world that however does not stand the test of absolute in anything, is practical and harmonious with very few anomalies and dichotomies.

You are so right. Everything is a theory.Even this idea that science is really just a theory.! Crazy or not.

For me I prefer to believe in theories or other inventions of the human, like the time, than in imaginary or supernatural forces or gods.
The ability to think is a theory?

It is true. Most people need to have things explained. Someone can't tell them that something is that way because it is. Few people can just accept things as they are and go along with it. In some ways, I am for this, and in other ways, I am not. I personally believe that the only things that are really real and not just an illusion- a sort of dream, or nightmare- are God, heart, soul, mind, personality.... those sorts of things.

I totally agree. All the textbooks in school act like this is the final say, total fact! It is all theory and changes all of the time. Evolution is questioned by MANY scientists and yet our kids are taught it is the way it is, period. We are a brainwashed society. I am glad you are figuring things out!
