A leader is a person who sets the vision for an organization and sees success based on WHAT is accomplished.

A manager is person who answers to a leader, but sees himself working for the team he manages and sees success more based on how the people on his team grow while still accomplishing the leader's vision.

These are clearly very different. But both are essential to the success of every orgnaization.

Most people are one or the other, only seldom does one person have high levels of both manager and leader.

Good luck,

Yes, you can be a leader without being a manager. Just because you don't have the title doesn't mean you cannot display leadership qualities.

And you can be a manager without being a leader, but it makes the job that much tougher. If you don't have leadership qualities in a managerial position, you're really a caretaker until a true leader comes along.

the answer to both is yes; they are very different skills; you can certainly have both skills in one person, but it is not necessary. In fact, some of the best leaders would make lousy managers.
