I wouldn't think you need a shrink. All it sounds like you need to do is gain some self confidence. There are great books at your local library on this topic. What you need to do is find common ground and interest with others. The more informed you are on topics and the more hobbies and interest you have the more relaxed and interesting you will become. Lots of people are shy but have forced themselves to get out and get busy trying to be the best they can be. There are some movie stars who will admit to still getting butterflies when they walk on stage. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. We all make them. The big thing is get involved in projects and clubs whether it be in school, church or volunteer work in your community. You will slowly loosen up if you make an effort. People normally shy away from quiet people because they don't feel like the quiet person cares to talk. Watch news and read up on current events. The more you have to talk about the more interesting you will be.

I think you wrote something that actually applies to most of us. I often feel the same way, thinking, I am not wearing the right clothes, I am not witty enough, I don't know anything about the conversation topic, etc...I believe, it is just a bit of insecurity, especially around people we don't know because we all try to fit in, we don't want to affront anyone, not say the wrong thing, not be embarrassed...the next time you feel this way, remind yourself of your good qualities you described above and remember, almost everyone gets those feelings. Some of us are just better at concealing that fact...

You might be what Jung termed an introvert.
Big deal you say? Still it is a good idea to know ourselves so if you check out Briggs & Myers theory of personalities you might be pleasantly surprised. I'm an INTP which means very introverted meaning I feel lost in a big crowd but when I'm with someone who is on the same level as I am I come alive.

open dialogue would be alot more effective on this forum. To do an assessment on whether or not you should seek outpatient psychiatric care, or could benefit from therapy from a psychologist or social worker, i would need to know more information. This post is somewhat vague. It sounds to me as though you are simply a bit self conscious. on a teenage level this is quite normal. I would not worry about it too much. If you have any further concerns, feel free to email me.

I believe that you are normal. Who doesn't feel like that sometimes. You say that when you are by yourself, you know that you're good, and I bet you are! Rather than feel intimidated, look at others as a challenge, and that's how you can strive to be better in all aspects!

Sounds like social phobia or social anxiety, get some self help books and yes see a shrink. You shouldn't have to feel that way.

It okay to talk to a therapist about self-esteem issues. Write down you strengths. Things you like about yourself.
