It originated in Mobile (lived there most all of my life), but I think New Orleans took over because of culture and parties. People don't want to go to Canal street and sit and watch and yell "Moonpies, Moonpies!"..they just want to get drunk and think they are doing something cultural and special. It's all about the big party.

Mobile was the first City to officially celebrate Mardi Gras. It is all kind of silly because it is the same group of people at Mardi Gras Point, Mobile (the first capitol of New France), Biloxi and finally New Orleans. Each of these places have added their own "spices" to the gumbo of Mardi Gras.
The answer to the question is it is all about money. Larger cities will always get the nod.
BTW, one of the best places to catch parades leading up to Mardi Gras is the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay (Fairhope and Daphne). It has Mardi Gras without the filth of some areas.
Mobile is nice, also. Just stay in the right areas (near the hotels, Fort Conde, the "transformer" building). I stay in Mobile Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and have a great time.
Everyone should experience Mardi Gras in New Orleans at least once. Just do it while your young and don't be surprised by anything you see. The areas away from the French Quarter are not as wild.
If you want to research an interesting Mardi Gras, check out Mamou, LA http://www.lsue.edu/acadgate/mammardi.htm
Below is a link to a great timeline.

At best, Mardi Gras in Mobile was first celebrated in 1703. Mardi Gras was celebrated in Louisiana in 1699 by Iberville at Mardi Gras Pointe along the Mississippi River. So, even the belief that it was first celebrated in North America in Mobile is incorrect.
Regardless, the modern notion of North American Mardi Gras, parades, throws, carnival organizations, balls, etc., originated in New Orleans and was copied by every other city.
I do have to hand it to Mobile though, Mobile is the only city besides New Orleans were Mardi Gras is a celebration and not an opportunity to riot.

on the commencing up-value, Mardi Gras in cellular was first celebrated in 1703. Mardi Gras was celebrated in Louisiana in 1699 by using Iberville at Mardi Gras Pointe alongside the Mississippi River. So, even the theory it was first celebrated in North usa in cellular is improper. Regardless, the reducing-element concept of North American Mardi Gras, parades, throws, carnival companies, balls, and so on., originated in New Orleans and was copied by using each and each distinctive city. I do could hand it to cellular even nonetheless, cellular is the only city different than New Orleans were Mardi Gras is a occasion and now no longer an threat to revolt.

It actually originated in Orleans, France. My best friend moved to Mobile in 2005, and that was the first I hear of them celebrating Mardi Gras there, but it makes sense. It's so close to New Orleans, I'm sure the cultures moved around and celebrated elsewhere.
