in 1890, the Progressive movement had just started. Progressives believed in three things: they wanted govt. to fight poverty and improve living conditions; they wanted to break up large corporations and regulate business; they also wanted voters to have more influence in government.
Reporters were more focused on daily life for Americans, and writers who wrote about problems of American life in the early twentieth Century were called muckrakers. President Roosevelt didn't particularly like them.
To replace the convict-lease system(where convicts were leased out to companies for labor), the govt. created prison farms, where young offenders were seperated from the old and sick. Prisoners were also in chain gangs, and did hard labor in chains around their ankles and wrists(not much better than the convict-lease system in my opinion).
The American Federation of Labor was formed(AFL) and they worked to stop sweatshops and keep young children under sixteen out of them. Labor Union wer also formed(an organization of workers formed to improve their wages, benefits, and working conditions).
The temperance movement was well underway as they tried to reduce and eventually stop the production, and use of alcohol. Carrie Nation was their most colorful leader in the movement(she carried arounda hatchet and destroyed countless saloons in the kansas area and was arrested more than thirty times!).
i hope i helped! this is such an important time in America's history because so many changes are going on and people are really starting to live it up!

The colonial era ended in 1781, when the American Revolutionary War ended. By 1890, the industrial revolution was gearing up... there are plenty of history books on the subject. Get yourself down to the library and ask your question to a good reference librarian.

Tell me that you're not American!!! The Revolutionary War ended in 1783 and the Declaration of Independence was in 1776

1890s was the big bicycle craze, which eventually led to the interstate highway system(long story). It was just about the time of the suffragettes.

It's a little late if your report is due tomorrow, young lady! Go to wikipedia and at least try to get some research done on your own!
