Tropical revolving storms are called hurricanes in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific oceans; typhoons in the South China Sea (Western Pacific); and tropical cyclones in the Indian and south Pacific oceans. They are synoptic scale systems that form in warm tropical waters on the equatorial trough.
Tornadoes are vortices that extend to the ground from severe thunderstorms. They are tens of metres in diameter. They are found on land or water and have been recorded in every country. They are not related to tropical revolving storms although the storms can contain severe thunderstorms which could generate tornadoes.

Yes I agree that these terms can be confusing. First off Hurricanes, Typhoons and Cyclones are all the same. They all come in from the sea and are powered by the warm waters, this is the reason why we don't get them in the UK. Hurricanes are what English people call them. Typhoons are Japanese and Cyclones are the other Asians. Tornadoes are completely different they come when hot air and cool air meet and puncture a layer above and then a tornado starts to appear and come out of the clouds and hits the Earth Please don't get mixed up between these two they are like opposites to each other.

Hurricanes and Typhoons are similar in structure and, I think, are anti-cyclones...meaning they flow counter-clockwise. One is just in another part of the world. Tornadoes and cyclones are the same thing. same difference as the other two, but flow clockwise and tightly constructed.

Hurricanes are rain storms with winds over 100 mph, cyclones are like mini tornadoes, typhoons are the same as hurricanes just in the eastern hemisphere, and tornado's is when hot air Chases cold air and goes around in circles.
