It was the British Commonwelth of Canada which joined World War One, as did the Aussies for much the same reasons. They were still politically tied to Britian, so whatever Britian did they would more or less be expected to support or at least condone.

Canada has been part of the British Commonwealth, even past World War II. Steadily, the Canadian government got stronger and British weaker, but amicably with mutual consent (The British learned from the American Revolution). I believe when Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau established a Constitution for Canada all, or virtually all of the ties were broken.
In World War I Canada was officially governered under the British monarch. Since Great Britain was at war with the Central Powers and Germany, Canada consider herself obligated to support the British. Therefore, Canada enterted World War I in support of the British government.
