You need a large tank with rocks for hiding places, 55 gallons or more, to breed cichlids.
Males have an "eye spot" on their lower fin.

Some cichlids are substrate breeders, some are mouthbrooders. How you raise and take care of the fish is dependent on what type of fish you have. Some fry grow really fast, others incredibly slow. Sometimes you can keep them with the parents and they'll take very good care of them, others will end up eaten. With some cichlids you can't tell the difference between genders, with others they're very different in color and/or size. Some are monogomous breeders, others are harem breeders, and some are colony breeders.

Basically it depends on what kind of cichlids you are talking about, and what tankmates are with them. Without more details you can't get a good answer.
