I heard that only three companies worlwide make watches these days, two in China owned by the Japanese companies of Casio and Seiko and one in Switzerland known as Swatch, and that all other watch companies simply buy working mechanisms from them. Is this true?

That is definitely not true. Rolex and other Swiss movement time pieces are made entirely in Switzerland. Most cheap watches are made in China and the higher end less expensive models are made in Japan.

I suppose watch-makers will make the watches...but I doubt it;s limited to them 3 only because what about the cheap $10 watches you can get-they aren't made by Seiko, Casio or Swatch they are usually brandless and nameless!

Well, the Swiss Swatch group does produce mechanics for many own and external brands, but definitely not for all.

Rolex builds the own watches completely independent, IWC does as well, and many smaller Swiss and even German watch companies do their own mechanics entirely themselves.
