Loosely speaking, a fractal is a design consisting of smaller, identical designs that make a repeating pattern. The pattern usually follows a mathematical formula. A fern is a good example of a fractal. On each leaf, you see an array of fronds that look just like the leaf itself does. This nature of fractals to express themselves in the same way repeated in smaller form is called "recursion".

Fractals are an important concept in mathematics and science. It turns out that a lot of things in nature can be modeled as fractals. Images that are displayed on the Internet use a compression technology based on fractals.
