I used to wonder this myself, until I tried to find a few answers -- harder than it seemed.
Many of the questions are specific to the people's situations, so a search engine wouldn't work (and I bet Yahoo would appreciate you're not assuming google is the only search engine, btw).
Part of the point of this site is that you can ask questions in natural language -- searching and refining searches is a skill a lot of people don't have.
And a lot of people aren't really asking questions: they're joking, making statements, and such (which is a no-no, according to the guidelines).

Answers based on statistics, like those found in search engines, don't necessarily relate to each individual so it's sometimes more assuring to get answers from others who may also differ from statistics, more personal sources such as Yahoo Q&A.

I think it could be they may not be sure how to phrase what they want to look for. Perhaps they've tried and had no luck. Of course they could also be lazy.
