How do burn a dvd/cd with a mac right?

I can burn just fine, but the burned disc isn't readable anywhere. I've tried with a cd and a dvd, always the same results. I have the equipment that apples says that I need (the superdrive).

Should I buy software?

Slow down the burn speed to less than 16x.
