Average persons bomb shelter....in room in home. The average person didn't have a regular shelter. We were told to pick a centrally located room in the home or basement. To stock it with supplies for the size family we had and for a 3 month period. Usually the only thing we had to change was the water to keep it fresh.
This was during the Cuban crises in California.
The reason for 3 month supply was if an atomic bomb or any type of bombs were dropped there would be no electric or gas or stores open etc.
You needed to be able to survive for a period of time before contamination would be clear enough to get these things. Also the water supplies would be contaminated, being gased wasn't as much of a issue as atomic contamination. Things today are different you most certainly would need a gas mask.
Gosh this brings back memories.

Bomb shelters are usually small and built underground with a door at the top opening to the surface or another room of an existing building. The walls are usually reinforced and made of concrete or something similar, usually several inches thick. The door usually has a steel bar or similar locking mechanism to prevent breakage.

Inside there is usually enough supplies to last for a few days or weeks, such as non-parishable food (e.g. cans or boxes), bottled water, a flashlight or lantern, a radio or portable television, and some type or chairs or bedding. There may also be a bathroom or something to serve that purpose, and first-aid kit is always beneficial. For more information, look up articles about the Cold War.

One could likely find chairs and a table, shelves stocked with food, bunk beds, some sort of an electrical/fuse panel, air vents/filters, hooks (for clothes/gas masks, a first aid kit, a radio, a small TV, extensive medical supplies (in bigger shelters), boxes for storing miscellaneous items, food and water boxes/packs/bottles, levers/handles for sliding the heavy blast door open/shut, toilet paper, perfume, extra clothing, big shelters had one or more washrooms, and those often had two or more decontamination showers. All I could think of!
