I sold Fashion Watches on eBay 2 years ago and I used Post Office (USPS) because it's cheaper than UPS.
Some Post Office implement their rules very strictly so if your item is thicker than 2 inches or weight more than 16oz, you can't use regular mail and must use Priority Mail (except books, CD, DVD that you can use Media Mail). USPS Priority Mail is faster than UPS Ground (I love it), it's cheaper but it doesn't include insurance (of course you can pay more for Post Office Insurance).
But I don't like Media Mail, it can take 3-6 weeks (longer than they advertise 1-2 weeks) to be delivered and with that long waiting time, it could be missing in transfer.
If your item price is low (less than $15) you don't need insurance, just use Delivery Confirmation. It's important if your customer lie to you and said he/she doesn't receive the item, you can use your delivery confirmation as proof (you can check it online too through usps website) that you mail the item and it's delivered.
Sometimes you will wait long enough in Post Office so if you don't like to wait that long you can use UPS and if you ship alot everyday you can ask them to come to your office (for extra money). I think USPS also has this service, you can check their website for details.
Good luck with your eBay business.

I've found that the Post Office has the widest selection of options to choose from, including insurance options. The flat-rate envelopes for Priority Mail have been a big money and stress reliever. However, there are more restrictions on what can be sent by the post office.

You can track a package with both services, but for the sake of it, I would suggest UPS. Post Office is a bit slow sometimes for service. UPS is a bit faster and more reliable.

To sent your sold object, I would choose UPS, because then you can track your sent item online and know that is has arrived. besides that, the buyer will pay for the shipping costs, so maybe you could list both prices and have the buyer decide.

For really important mail, you need to use registered mail or other options. Check out their website for all the ways to mail. Priority Mail just means it's faster than 1st Class. Sorry to hear you had a problem w/ lost mail.
