"Flaming" red is good, but the children didn't form an image. What word could I use, other than "fiery" words, to describe bright red to children 3 -7 years old? I'm stumped.

I can't use "bloody, either, because these children are sick. You see what I mean. Also, this age group is literal. The image would conjure a "bloodied" red fish.

Fire engine red is probably the best to use to help them form an image of the color. Or you could try associating the color with stop signs, roses, apples, cherries, or strawberries. They'll relate best to something they are familiar with, so maybe associating the color red with fruits they've eaten will help.

You could use other things in their realm of knowledge, like:

Tomato red
Apple
Clifford the Big Red Dog
or like the previous suggestion, fire engine is pretty good too.

Cherry, candy apple, fire truck. Compare to red crayons or legos maybe too.

how about a red balloon? I don't know a single kid who has never seen a red balloon (in the US atleast).

I've always heard it described as "fire engine red."
