Crickets don't chirp unless they're adult males. These would have to be at least an inch long. At around 1/2-3/4" you can tell the males from the females because the females will have an ovipositor (a long, thin, black projection from their rear) to lay their eggs in soil - this will be small in young females, but once you know what to look for, it's very noticeable. Males don't have one. If you want to hear some chirping, get a couple males and about a dozen females, put them together, and turn the lights off!
Temperature also plays a role in chirping. If it's cold, they won't chirp at all - as it gets warmer, they will chirp more. With some kinds of crickets, you can calculate the temperature by counting the number of times one cricket chirps in a minute.

I have worked in pet stores for years, and the crickets we sell always chirp. The only possibility to your non chirping crickets that I can come up with is
a. You just aren't hearing them.
b. They are only females. While our supplier sends males and females, I suppose it would be possible that they only send females, but I find it highly unlikely that someone would go through all the criskets separating them by sex.
The pin heads are too young to chirp. males "chirp" to call a mate.

copperhead is right on the money 1 inch males to be able to hear them. I buy 3/4 so I can feed them to the herps before they can make noise. buy the way they do not rub their wings to make the noise check out the website below. and as for the temp hears the skinny.
The frequency of chirping varies according to temperature. To get a rough estimate of the temperature in degrees fahrenheit, count the number of chirps in 15 seconds and then add 37. The number you get will be an approximation of the outside temperature

Only adult crickets chirp, and only males chirp. Pinheads are newly born crickets, they don't have wings. no crickets make noises when they want to attract females, so it can be anytime. Juveniles can't make sound as they don't the their wings yet

they don't chirp because they are too young. just let a few of those little buggees get loose, and you will hear them chirp just fine, as long as they are males. My son also has dragons, and whenever hegets crickets 2 or 3 get loose, and they wind up under my fridge or in MY bathroom and drive me crazy.
