It depends on the type of setup. If the connections have little wings on them, they can usually be opened by hand, though it may take some strength to do so. Otherwise a rubber strap wrench or channel locks will work, the strap wrench being ideal. Be sure to put a pan to catch water underneath, and tilt the "P trap" that faces the sewer drain up, so that you don't send your Ear ring shooting down the sewer drain. If you use channel locks accept the possibility that you might crack the fitting and need to replace it, if you do you will need to go to the hardware store to get a new one, they are pretty standard. It is possible you might find some pretty nasty stuff in there, hair, soap, etc.. wear rubber gloves if possible.

Most sink "traps" are now plastic and are only hand tightened, so with a little strength you can loosen it. However, if it's not plastic or you hear any cracking or groaning noises - back off the pressure. Always - always - remember that the trap will have water in it, so grab an empty coffee can or small trash can to catch the water. Sometimes it's helpful to apply a little upward pressure on the bend when you're trying to loosen the ring and make sure you don't cross thread when you reattach. Good luck!

Probably not. If you can do this, then the plug is not on tight enough. Borrow a pair of waterpump pliers, and use them. Place a can or a pot under the trap to catch any water and other gunk that comes out. When you replace the plug make sure that it is tight, but don't over tighten it.

I'm not a plumber, but I know that you need a basin to catch the water and an adjustable wrench, and a cloth to keep the wrench from scratching the pipe.

When you go to put it back on, better have some plumber's jelly (it comes in a little tube like vaseline) to make sure that it screws back on without leaking. Then run the water for a minute before you take away the basin! Good luck!

You should be able to no matter which set up you have PVC can easily be opened because it should only be hand tightened if it is a metal trap a pair of channel locks might be needed only due to corrosion on the inside of the pipes

Look and see if your pipes are plastic/PVC. If they are, you can probably use a towel to wrap around it, get a grip, and loosen the big tightening thing on there, and get to it. If you can't, just don't use that sink until you can get somebody to help you so you don't wash it down and away forever.
Good Luck!! Sorry about your earring:((

you will need a pair of channel locks (pliers)... cause you have to undo at least one of the threaded nuts on top of either side on the trap... (rem turn to the left)
