Just curious. I know betas don't school. Not so sure about goldfish. (By school I mean needing more than 4 fish of the same species.)

Yes there are a few. if you go to Petsmart (a clean one with a good reputation) they will have it listed if they school or not.

Goldfish do not school.

Tropical fish that do not school: mollies, platies, guppies just to name a few.

There are tons. But you still need to at least buy all fish in pairs, they do better in pairs.

Livebearers (platies, mollies, guppies, swordtails) don't school, but they do enjoy the company of their own species. Cichlids don't school--but generally aren't a good choice unless you have a larger tank. Gouramis don't school, and the dwarf gouramis are very colorful and stay quite small. (Other types of gourami can grow fairly large). Some fish that DO need to be in schools are tetras, danios, rasboras, hatchetfish and cories, among others. Hope this helped!

As a matter of fact most don't school. Tetras school and some of the smaller catfish school but many other common fish such as cichlids, livebearers and killifish don't
