Wash in cold water with Woolite. Rinse well and squeeze the water out not wring. When your ready place a towel on the table and then place the sweater and shape it back the way it should be. Take a hanger and put a small towel around it and put you sweater on it and hang up on the rod of your bathroom or where ever . wait awhile and squeeze the bottom of the sweater as the water will accumulate there.

I would never wash a wool sweater! My husband did this once. It was a hand knitted sweater from Ireland. He put it in the gentle cycle, took it out, and it had shrunk to the size for a toddler! I would only dry clean wool!

The above answers are all good about how to hand wash it.
However, if it's a "really great" wool sweater, I'd recommend dry cleaning to avoid any chance of shrinkage or stretching.

Handwash in woolite in cool water and squeeze out excess water then put in a thick towel and squeeze out more, then lie flat to dry. to fluff after drying use the no heat cycle on the dryer and use a dryer sheet. Good luck. You can lie it to dry on your bed with a thick towel under it and maybe aplastic trash bag under it to keep your bed dry then turn until almost dry then hang over the shower rod or the door to a room and let iti finish drying, not to stretch it out of shape. Maybe near a heat source to hurry the drying time.

Handwash in woolite in cold water is old fashioned but the only way I know. Don't hang it up to dry. Flat dry on table.
