I have a beta fish in a 1 gallon fish tank and I wanted another fish but I don't know what kind that they will not kill.

I had a beta for 2 years in a tank with fan tail goldfish. There are some really pretty ones out there that will actually be a good background color for a beta.

I installed a small heater and kept the temp around 68-70 F. Beta's are more active in warmer water. The problem with this is you will have to really stay on top of your filter because golfish put out more ammonia at higher temps.

I also had some albino bottom feeders in the tank.

The one trick I used was to feed the goldfish on one side of the tank then I fed the beta on the other after a little bit they figured it out but they also ate both foods with out a problem.

Hope this helps.

1. Only have one male betta in a tank to matter how large it is.

2. Avoid fish with long, wavy tails like bettas. The fin action will trigger the betta's attack response. Fan tail guppies and fancy goldfish are examples to avoid.

3. Select fish that are the same size as the betta and will not grow larger. (The betta may perceive small fish as food and larger fish might think the betta is food.)

4. Stay away from aggressive fish like barbs, danos, gouramis, angelfish and catfish.

5. Use as large a tank as possible with as few fish as possible to reduce interactions.

6. Provide plenty of rocks and plants to provide hiding places.

Follow these guidelines and you should be okay with having a male betta in a community tank. Good Luck!

depends on tank size. what size tank do you plan on having them in or have him in already? as soon you provide this information I'd be glad to help.

a 1 gallon is BARELY enough room for a betta, if you want any fish in with the betta you'll need at least 10gallons. if you're fine with only a snail or a shrimp or an african dwarf frog then a 5 gallon tank would be fine. either wat you need a filter and a heater before adding any other fish.
