Ok, i go in a small independent private business that sells all sorts of collectables. Rock t-shirts, shot glasses, bobblehead dolls, a little of everything. I collect bobblehead dolls. I found one i want, take it up to the register. I open up my wallet and realize i had forgotten to stop at the bank. So i decide i will use my charge card instead. The lady takes my card, walks over and grabs a notepad and ink pen, grabs her cell phone and starts to make a call.
I ask her "what are you doing". She says she has to call the owner (her husband) to run the card from another location. Something about their card processor was down. I just politely asked her to hold onto the doll and give me my card back, i will just run to the bank to get some cash and come back for it. She did-didnt seem insulted. I came back 15 minutes later and paid cash.
Why was she doing this? Was she about to rip me off? I hate to think this, as i have purchased items there before and seem to like the store/people.

If you have shopped their previously and been comfortable with the way things were done, then I personally don't feel that they would have chosen that day and time to decide to rip you off.

Not sure I would have been entirely comfortable either with this. I think you did the right thing by following your heart and going to get cash. Once someone has your credit card number, they can do anything they want to do with it, be it legal or not, and you are stuck to clean it all up!

She was going to call her credit representative who would have ran the card from there. She was not trying to rip you off.
