My wife and I jointly own some music CDs purchased used or through various retail and mail-order outlets.

Is it legally permissible for us to make copies of those CDs, one for each of us to use in each of our cars?

2nd question, is it legal to do the same with music that was purchased via iTunes?

If we had children, would they be permitted to use burnt copies of our music/load it into their iPods (were talking category one here, music purchased from a retail outlet)?

Ok, my question is extended given some of the recent answers.

Do the copyright restrictions apply to music purchased from iTunes (which allows you to load it up on multiple computers (up to 5), and/or multiple ipods (e.g. husband's and wife's)).

I'm just trying to establish the most cost-effective route to legally purchase music for my family.

Yes of course it's legal. Itunes won't allow you to burn more than 5 CDs you buy on there though. Itunes will let you copy the songs you buy onto up to 5 computers and an unlimited amount of iPods. If Apple allows it, it's definately legal.

It depends on where you live, but even in the most liberal jurisdictions, making copies so that a cd could be played on two different players at the same time violates copyright laws.
