In this paragraph I put (Charen 700) 3 times. Should I just only put it once at the last quotation of the paragraph?

She also counters the argument for supporting stem cell research by appealing to the value of morals. She states that the fear of using organs from executed criminals might “introduce temptations to the administration of capital punishment”(Charen 700) that would be immoral. She believes that if a state “takes someone’s life” (Charen 700), it should “be for one reason only-to exact punishment for a heinous crime” (Charen 700). She doubts how effective the judicial system would remain if organs were taken away from executed criminals, as she describes: “imagine if judges and juries were also considering how many lives could be saved” (Charen 700) with the use of healthy organs. Essentially, she is arguing that it would be unfair and immoral to impact the criminal’s right to a fair trial by questioning the number of lives that could be saved if the criminals were put...

Because you have quoted directly and have not paraphrased, I would suggest you cite the source all three times as you have done. If you paraphrased, only one citation at the end of the paragraph would be necessary.

Your first respondent is totally incorrect. That she even suggests that 700 means that is when she wrote it is absurd and shows she doesn't know what she is talking about. The page number is correct!!

For proper MLA formtting you should cite the whole source initially and then only cite the page number. For example, in your case, leave the first citation the same (Charen 700) but after that cite only (700). If you were to cite a different source in between you would have to list the author last name again like this.

(Charen 700)
(700)
(Smith 1)
(Charen 700)

Hopefully that makes sense.

Since you are not citing any other author in the paragraph ONLY cite at the end. Did this author really write this in the year 700?
You should be using the YEAR it was written.

Since you are writing on a criminal justice topic I presumed you should be using APA not MLA. APA is the most frequently requested citation style.

I think you would definitely be safe taking out the second "(Charen 700)" and probably the third as well. I counted four parenthetical citations total. Since you repeat "She" in your sentences, it's clear that you're referring to the same author. I don't think a teacher/professor would be bothered or confused with only two citations, one at the beginning and one at the end.
