In general, Redi's experiment was a test of spontaeous generation. In part it was an attempt to explore the feasibility of creation, that is to say life from lifelessness.
Redi knew that raw meat left out over time would eventually produce maggots as the meat decomposed. The question was, "where did they come from?"
Redi placed raw meat in three containers. One, he left open, the second he screened in to keep critters out but allowed air in, and the third, he sealed closed.
During the course of the experiement, Redi observed some flies buzzing around the first two containers as the meat became......fragrant.
After several days, the meat in the first container (the open one) had maggots in it. The meat in the second container did not, however there were maggots on the screen above the meat. The third container had no maggots at all.
Redi concluded that the maggots were the result of the flies' visitations and that they were laying eggs based on the smell of the rotting meat. He concluded that maggots did not spontaneously generate from the meat, that they were not the result of something that was already in the meat.
There was some additional speculation that this also showed that life could not come from lifelessness, but the conclusion was eventually dismissed as the experiment was considered too scientifically unsound for that particular conclusion to be drawn. The experiement was sound enough, however to show that maggots are the result of flies' eggs.

Hope that helps.
