No, generally speaking upgrading to a more complicated operating system would make your machine run slower, because it will require more memory.

How much memory does your computer have? Adding memory is the best and cheapest way to speed up performance. I just upgraded the memory in my daughter's laptop from 256 MB to 1 GB, and the performance has dramatically increased. Now she doesn't complain about virtual memory warnings and applications open much faster. You can usually upgrade to 1 GB for about $100. Crucial.com has pretty good prices on memory modules, and they have an app that will scan your system to determine what kind of memory you need.

You're best off saving up around £500-£800 or so and getting a PC with flatscreen and XP. Even if you spend on the old PC it will cost more in the long run. A new PC would be your best option as it would be faster, have more ram and new technologies such as USB 2.0! Maybe even a much bigger harddrive.

I don't think it is worth spending on your old PC as you won't be able to upgrade to the latest hardware, just make the hardware better in some areas.

You can't download more memory. You can either delete some old things you don't use anymore; get a new hard drive(Depending on your computer you can have two hard drives and switch back and forth between them); or you can get more RAM. Although if its hard drive space that you don't have enough of the RAM isn't going to help.If you do delete old programs you don't need any more then that should be fine but what I don't like about it is that once you fill up that space again you're going to have to delete more and more stuff. Hard drive can be expensive but they come in handy a lot! If your computer only has space for one hard drive then you can get an external hard drive. Its a portable hard drive you can plug into pretty much any computer. Its like one huge flash drive in a way. With the external hard drive you can move things from your normal hard drive to the external hard drive and just forget about it till you need it again. Just drop by any BestBuy and pick on up. You'll be really glad you did, trust me.

if its slow u need to upgrade the memory, maybe even processor. XP wont make it go quicker (although depending on ur system maybe erasing the hard drive and installing windows xp may clear out enough clutter to notice a small difference.) How old is the system?

If your computer is an old one, you just need to get a new one. It is not practical to upgrade an old decrepit computer, hoping it would work better. Usually the old ones may not take in newer upgrades in a way that is totally beneficial.

Consult someone at the customer care counter of one of your local computer stores, like Fry's, Best Buy or any other place that is willing to give advice.

If your computer is slow, then upgrading the operating system wont help. Computer speed is based on your processor and ram. In fact, your computer would probably run slower if you were to upgrade to windows xp because it is more demanding on your computer in terms of ram.

Answer is: No

Your best bet is to go off of XP's minimum requirements. It would be helpful if you could give more details about the hardware specs of your computer. Although XP has the ability to limit features depending on your hardware. Your most likely best to stick with what you have. Also listing what OS your on right now would be helpful. XP does indeed require more RAM (512 usually is required)

run this program.

Then send me computer brand, model number, video card listed, how much ram in computer, and I can let you know.

Some computers are too old and updating to windows XP is not worth it. I can be able to tell you if you can put more memory or even add or upgrade a video card.

No. It'll make it slower! XP is good, but you need to have a fair amount of memory. 128MB is bare minimum and I think the CPU needs to be at least 233Mhz. Even with those bare minimums met, your experience of XP would be awful. Just stick to 98 or whatever.

Well XP would need more RAM and processing to run so you'd most likely not be able to do anything with it other than switch it on and look at your new pretty desktop!
