A beer bottle cap fell into my garbage disposal yesterday and is rattling around. I can't afford a plumber, what do I do?

This would be a good time to mention that I'm not comfortable sticking my hand in. . .after seeing a horror movie where a garbage disposal ground a character's hand down to a nub.

you could also look under the sink and un-plug the disposal, just a thought. After that, reach in and get the bottle cap. Of course if you're still queasy about that, try a magnet, BBQ tongs, 2 spoons.

If it is still rattling just carefully pick it out with chopsticks when unit is off. If the unit was jammed by the cap it probabaly popped the internal thermal breaker which you can reset with red button underneath the unit. Most disposals (probably all) have a disconnect ring mounting it to the sink. Turn it off at circuit breaker for safety and drop the unit so you can dislodge the cap from the grinder blade using some sort of tool as a pick. Of course wiki it and look it up in "how things work".

Get a flashlight and look into the disposer. If the rubber splash preventer is in place, you'll have to hold it to the side. Look around until you locate the bottle cap which will be pounded into a smallish ball by now. Reach in, grab it and lift it out. It isn't rocket science and it's perfectly safe as long as no one turns on the disposer as you do this. If your hand it too large, you'll need to get a person with a smaller hand or a pair of tongs or some such to grab it and lift it out.

They have telescopic magnets that look like an ink pen. You can get them at an automotive store or Walmart. Just pull it out to the length you need stick it in the garbage disposal (please make sure the current is OFF) and waa-laa... the cap sticks to the magnet and you don't have to stick you hand in there! :-)

Just reach in and get the dang thing! It won't suddenly turn on and grind up your hand. I don't think ANYBODY would call a plumber for that. I think a plumber would laugh if he had to come out for that.

Stick your hand down there and get it! (I do it all the time!)
Or, maybe a magnet will do it?
